WIFI SIGNALS :: TO COUNT NUMBER OF PEOPLES IN A CROWD
Yes!!! WIFI signals can be used to count the number of peoples anywhere in a given space, this idea has diverse application and can be used in the field of, energy efficiency and rescue operation that is done at the time of hazards to locate peoples.
WIFI signals are not confined to provide internet access, which is proved by the researchers from university of California – Santa Barbara.
This process requires two cards that are WIFI enabled which are placed at two different ends, and estimated number of peoples can be counted, using only received power measurements of the link between two cards.
It is not mandatory that mobile phones of those peoples must be WIFI enabled. So forth, they have confirmed on determining 9 peoples in inside and outside the building settings.
HOW DOES IT DETECTS THE NUMBER OF PEOPLES
Whenever any person crosses the path that is placed between the two cards, causes the attenuation in signals.
Human bodies also scatter signals – due to which a multi path fading phenomenon is occurred – when they not in direct path of signals.
Researchers developing a mathematical framework that is based on these two phenomenon.
BENEFITS OF WIFI SIGNALS IN VARIOUS FIELDS
- Can be used in smart homes and buildings
- Can be used in air conditioners and heaters – determines number of peoples in a given space and adjust cooling or heating accordingly
- Business planning – stores can use this technology to determine total customers and potential buyers
- Rescue and security operation will be benefited very well
